The Infection Prevention and Employee Health Nurse oversees organization wide patient care programs, nursing care policies and procedures, and oversees the quality of infection prevention services. This position is responsible for planning and engagement in disease and health event surveillance, investigation and assessment activities, coordinating special epidemiological projects, and leading and training other staff in infection prevention activities. This position is responsible for facilitating the hospital’s employee health program which includes initial health screenings, disease prevention and detection, and following up employee health needs. Projects a professional demeanor and appearance while maintaining the confidentiality of the hospital and employees as appropriate.
Implements the surveillance program throughout the facility to identify outbreaks, potential infection hazards, track hospital-acquired infections, and communicable disease exposures.
Assures that regular rounds are completed on all departments for the purposes of staff observation and data collection. Monitors compliance with isolation procedures, hand hygiene guidelines and other evidence-based infection prevention practices.
Assures that reportable diseases are communicated to appropriate state and local agencies as required by law.
Coordinates new employee and on-going staff education related to infection prevention and infectious diseases.
Serves as a resource to hospital staff related to infection prevention and surveillance topics.
Develops the annual infection surveillance program, and submits it for approval to the Medical Executive Committee and Governing Board.
Aggregates, analyzes and reports data related to infections (community acquired vs. hospital acquired) and data related to targeted surveillance activities to the Infection Control and Performance Improvement Committee.
Coordinates the infection control portion of on-site regulatory surveys and assists in completing follow-up activities related to surveys.
Collaborates with Engineering/Facilities to assure that appropriate infection prevention measures are taken during construction projects. Monitors to assure identified measures are implemented effectively.
Reviews, revises and develops new infection prevention policies and procedures on an on-going basis to assure relevance to current clinical practice and CDC guidelines.
Maintains data and reporting responsibilities to the appropriate entities such as CMS and CDC.
Performs pre-employment screenings for all new employees including: administering vaccinations as required, pre-employment drug screening, and respirator fit testing, and annual follow up according to hospital policy.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Ability:

Bachelor’s degree in nursing is required; Master's degree in nursing or related field is preferred
Current Registered Nurse Licensure in the State of Idaho is required
Ability to achieve BLS Certification is required within 60 days of hire
1 – 3 years of previous infection prevention experience is required
Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) certification is preferred, or must be able to achieve certification within 1 year of hire
Work is of medium demand, sitting 25%, walking 25%, standing 25%, reaching with hands and arms 20%, crouching, kneeling, stooping, and crawling 5%. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds individuals or up to 150 pounds with assistance is required. Ability to push or pull up to 200 pounds with assistance. Oral and written expression and comprehension is required; Visual acuity including near vision and color vision is required. Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments is essential to performing assigned duties. Working conditions are clean with bright lighting, with environmentally controlled temperatures. Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended. Direct contact with blood or other body fluids to which universal precautions apply. Personal protective equipment is made available and must be worn. Travels a minimal amount up to 10% by land or air.
