The Birmingham, Alabama VA Medical Center is searching for an experienced Infection Control Registered Nurse (RN) to join their dynamic healthcare team.
The Infection Control Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the clinical and administrative aspects of the Birmingham VA Medical Center's (BVAMC) Infection Control program. The selected RN is administratively assigned to the Chief Nurse-Medicine, Patient Care Service.
The RN works collaboratively with the Infectious Disease Director, The Multi Drug Resistant Coordinator (MDRO) and serves as a consultant for other members of the clinical and facility leadership team to prevent and manage infectious diseases.
The RN is an expert practitioner and serves as the facility's subject matter expert and consultant for hospital infection control.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Collects and analyzes data for infection control measures, including prevalence rates, infections rates, transmission rates, and colonization rates; and reports to all stakeholders including the VHA National Data Base and IPEC; and uses the data effectively to evaluate outcomes
Participates in the development, review and revision of infection control guidelines, policies, and procedures consistent with national standards for infection control
Ensures the practices of healthcare employees, visitors, and students are consistent with infection prevention standards and consults with service leaders on educational needs
Collaborates with other infection control nurses, infectious disease, and multidisciplinary teams to evaluate the environment of patients, patient care environment, and patient care equipment and products, to ensure they meet the internal and external standards of infection control and prevention
Collaborates with other infection control nurses, Epidemiologist, Patient Care and other service lines of the BVAMC, and community infection preventionists to exchange knowledge and share clinical expertise in infection control and prevention to improve quality of patient care outcomes
Creates, activates, and or maintains computer alerts and progress notes to identify previously infected or colonized patients
Interprets laboratory values and analyzes findings of diagnostic tests
Monitors compliance with Infection Control Standards in assigned areas
Collaborates with interdisciplinary leadership to identify, evaluate, plan and implement action plans for improvement to assure compliance with Infection Control Standards
Consults with interdisciplinary leadership to identify, plan and provide education to Medical Center. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to identify, evaluate, plan, implement and trace required surveillance of infection control data
Collects, inputs, analyze, interprets and reports data from various sources, data banks, and local programs to assure compliance with standards and performance improvement
Consults with interdisciplinary leadership to identify, plan and provide education to Medical Center employees across service lines
Provides support and backup coverage to the MDRO Coordinator
Utilizes various software programs, including but not limited to CPRS, VISTA, IPEC, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word
Preferred Experience / Qualifications:
Bachelor or Masters of Science in Nursing
Two (2) years’ experience in infectioncontrol or related field
Two (2) years medical-surgical or related inpatient nursing experience
Professional Nursing or Infection Control Certification (Certification in Infection Prevention and Control-CIC)
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated ability to be dependable, self-directed and flexible
Work Schedule: Normally 7:30am-4:00pm Monday-Friday with flexibility to meet patient care demands
Salary Range: Up to $90,293 per year

Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

The Birmingham VA Medical Center is a 313-bed acute tertiary care facility located in the historic Southside district of the city. The facility provides acute tertiary medical and surgical care to veterans of Alabama and surrounding states. We provide health care services to eligible veterans in VISN 7
The medical center serves as a referral center for this population area with 131 operating be...ds currently. Recent construction provides state-of-the-art facilities and equipment in all clinical programs. Care is provided in practically all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties. Most staff physicians have joint appointments with VA and its primary affiliation, University of Alabama at Birmingham. The BVAMC operates eight Community Based Outpatient Clinics in North Alabama.
