Vanderbilt University Medical Center Specialty Pharmacy Post-Graduate Year One (PGY1) Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program is a 12-month, full-time residency, accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). The purpose of the PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency Program is to build upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications.
Our residency program offers the opportunity to learn and practice pharmaceutical care in a fully integrated clinical outpatient specialty pharmacy model with nationally certified specialty pharmacists. Our clinical pharmacists are integrated into over 15 specialty physician clinics across Vanderbilt University Medical Center with linkage to care to our centralized, state-of-the-art, cold chain equipped, URAC and ACHC accredited fulfillment center and outpatient pharmacy. Core experiences include working in administrative/business management and accreditation, MTM, oncologic, inflammatory, infectious, and neurological clinics along pharmacy dispensing and assisting in the Shade Tree Community Care clinic. The resident will work with the Vanderbilt Specialty Pharmacy Health Outcomes and Research Team on high quality and comprehensive outcomes research in health-system specialty pharmacy. Focused and personalized needs are also incorporated into each resident's program goals. This site utilizes the ASHP Residency Learning System and PharmAcademic extensively which offers the resident a tailored, personalized, and well-planned learning experience throughout the year. In addition, the resident will have the opportunity to obtain a teaching certificate and gain teaching experience as a primary APPE rotation preceptor.
The mission of our program is to provide pharmacist residency education and training in community-based practice in order to develop pharmacy leaders who are capable of improving the health of patients within the communities they serve. Our program's PGY1 year will focus on establishing a core skill set in key outpatient specialty pharmacy clinical domains (inflammatory, infectious, neurologic, and oncologic conditions) along with development of skills in chronic disease MTM, pharmacy operations, leadership, training, and outcomes research. More specifically, the program works on development of these core skills by focusing on pharmacotherapy evaluation and management, medication access management, direct patient and family education and training, prescription intake and fulfillment, completion of research, quality and service line projects, presentation development and delivery, as well as involvement in URAC and ACHC accreditation operation standards, assessments and contracting.
This residency will tentatively begin on June 27, 2022, with one residency position based in the Vanderbilt Specialty Pharmacy (VSP), a national leader in Health-System Specialty Pharmacy practice. Vanderbilt University Medical Center also offers PGY2 specialty residencies in Cardiology, Critical Care, Infectious Diseases, Pharmacy Informatics, Oncology, Pediatrics, and Solid Organ Transplant. PGY2 specialty residencies require the successful completion of a PGY1 residency year. VUMC pharmacy residency positions beginning in 2022 in postgraduate year one (PGY1) or postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency programs are offered to applicants through the ASHP Resident Matching Program (the "Match"). The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) is responsible for establishing the Rules of the Match, and for monitoring the implementation of the Match. The administration and conduct of the Match is carried out by National Matching Services Inc. on behalf of ASHP.
A broad range of experiences are incorporated into the residency curriculum. Training focuses on clinical management of a full range of disease states in specialty pharmacy along with the complex process of medication access to specialty medications. Rotations are designed to ensure experience is gained with the ability to initiate therapy as well as follow patients with chronic disease forward in time as a member of the longitudinal healthcare team. Clinical knowledge needed to obtain professional certification with the practice specialty is provided as are skills to conduct research independently and assess and enhance specialty pharmacy services.
Position Qualifications (Required):
Applicants must submit their application in the PhORCAS application portal by December 31st and complete an online application with Vanderbilt University Medical Center for the VSP PGY1 Community-Based Pharmacy Residency. A CV, Letter of Intent, three letters of recommendation (minimum of two letters from clinical preceptors), Immunization Course Certificate of completion and University transcripts for pharmacy coursework are required to be via the ASHP PhORCAS application system.
Applicants will be required to be a graduate of an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program and must obtain unrestricted licensure to practice as a Pharmacist in the State of Tennessee by July 31st of their residency year. Residents who are not fully licensed by this date will have modifications to their scheduled responsibilities. Failure to obtain Tennessee licensure by October 1st will result in dismissal from the residency program and termination from employment at VUMC, unless licensure is anticipated by October 31st. Verification of professional degree conferred, as well as Tennessee Pharmacist licensure occurs in accordance with VUMC policy.

VUMC will conduct pre-employment background checks on all final candidates for all positions in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws. The background check process will begin after a contingent offer of employment is made and accepted by the selected/matched residency candidate. Pharmacy employees and candidates who are conditionally offered employment at Vanderbilt University Medical Center will also be tested for compliance with alcohol and drug use in accordance with VUMC policy.
