The position works within the Veterans Health Administration in VISN21 at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System GI Endoscopy Unit. The position works closely with nurses, physicians, and other members of the health care team. The incumbent provides clinical, programmatic, technical, and clerical support in the GI Endoscopy Unit procedural setting. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-6 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Experience working in a healthcare setting, inpatient hospital setting, outpatient surgery, or clinical setting; flexibility to meet the needs of the unit and/or procedure schedule adjustments; knowledge of HIPAA and standard precautions. The applicant must possess broad knowledge to provide patient care and to assist staff, patients, and patient family members during their pre-, intra- and post- procedure stay in the GI Endoscopy Unit. The applicant must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate with nurses, physicians, and other members of the healthcare team. The applicant must provide clinical, programmatic, technical, and clerical support in the GI Endoscopy Unit procedural setting. There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. ["Major Duties include but is not limited to: Assists with patient intake, verifying patient identity using two unique identifiers, assisting patient to change into gown, connecting patient to monitoring equipment. Assists with patient education according to the extent of the HT's knowledge. Assists nurse when he/she administers medications and/or treatments. Carries out special treatments and assists with procedures. Gives meaningful instructions and explanations to patient regarding purposes of special diagnostic tests and procedures to the extent of the HT's knowledge, involves higher level practitioner when necessary. Demonstrates knowledge of safety including adherence to hand hygiene policies, universal precautions, and infection prevention standards Consistently complies with HIPPA Privacy Rules Transports patients, as directed, to designated areas utilizing the appropriate method of transporting the patient (such as wheelchair or gurney) Has knowledge and ability to recognize urgent or emergent patient care situations and initiate appropriate emergency interventions. The work involves standing long hours, walking, bending, and reaching on a routine basis.
