Performs work in a clinical laboratory providing a range of diagnostic functions to include blood-drawing procedures, assisting patients, and specimen processing. Provides assistance of a technical, specialized, or support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions. Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. OR; Education and Training For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. To be creditable, this specialized experience must have been equivalent to the GS-04 level in Federal service to qualify at the GS-05. Examples of specialized experience include: Performed standard diagnostic tests or procedures such as venipuncture according to written procedure or directed by the physician or other professional staff. Verified the accuracy and completeness of requests through the use of VistA or CPRS computer systems. Maintained the laboratory facilities, equipment and controlled supplies. Performed blood drawing duties in a courteous manner. Transported specimens from the drawing area to the main laboratory for processing and distribution.
