Summary: Provides the Emergency Department waiting area an identified individual to provide communication and updates to patients and family members. Serves as the point of contact for patients who are waiting, and provides re-assessments as needed to reassure patients and provide triage nurse with updates.

Responsibilities: Clear, empathetic communication with patients and family members. This position requires knowledge of departmental and hospital policies relevant to the delivery of emergency care. Under the direction of the RN, may provide re-assessment of blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, portable pulse oximetry, subjective pain measurement, blood glucose, and any other measurements within scope. May provide teaching to patients and family members within scope, particularly regarding infectious disease prevention practices. Reports any changes in assessment to the triage RN. Keeps the patients and family members informed and provides comfort as possible, such as blankets, directions to vending machines, explanations of delays, etc. Makes frequent rounds of the lobby and, if need, the parking lot to assure patients and visitors are reassured and comfortable.
