The technologist operates independently and without direct supervision as the technologist responsible for the performance and coordination of all diagnostic radiology examinations. These exams are performed with and/or without the use of contrast materials. Also performs DEXA (dual energy absorptiometry) bone mineral density exams of the spine, extremities, and pelvis. The purpose of these exams is to produce diagnostic studies facilitating diagnosis and treatment. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: Be a citizen of the United States : (Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3.g.). English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and7407(d). Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Prevents contamination, recognizes patient reactions, anticipates technique factor difficulties, etc. Appropriately uses records/files of exams, including fluoroscopy reporting, registration and editing of exams in the information systems, copying images to alternate media, HIS-RIS work processes. Works with and performs operator-level troubleshooting of the Patient Archiving Computer System (PACS). Properly identifies patient images to prevent incorrect identity on patient images. Verifies the patient I.D. band and the request match. Confirms patient identity by verbally confirming patient name and social security number or date of birth as required by JCAHO. Participates in stocking and inventory of all supplies and pharmaceuticals used in the assigned area to prevent patient care disruption. Monitors technological advances in the fields of Radiology/DEXA; maintains ARRT and BLS certifications. Processes digital images and insures images are transmitted to PACS. Supervises and trains x-ray students in clinical and didactic areas. Explains exams using population specific guidelines. Understanding risks that may occur with exams. As appropriate, monitors vital signs, recognizes allergic reactions, and initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Receives and interprets radiology requests. Enters pertinent radiology information, requests, cancellations, and exam edits via the Radiology Information System (RIS). Correctly marks images with L & R markers; identifies area of interest with annotations on image and documentation in PACS. Follows safe patient handling guidelines, uses safe patient handling equipment when necessary. Maintains productivity at the established level for the assigned duties. Ability to vary tests or treatment procedures as needed to compensate for patient's individual medical conditions and body habitus.
