Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center is seeking to fill positions for Health Technician (Vascular) with Nursing Hospital Service. To qualify for this position applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the Group Coverage Qualification Standards for Technical and Medical Support Positions, 0640 and the Individual Occupational Requirements for series 0640. GS-04 Grade Level: General Experience: You must have six (6) months of general experience. Examples of general experience would typically include, but are not limited to: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. AND, Specialized Experience: You must have six (6) months of specialized experience for the occupation. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: recognizes and reacts to emergent changes in patient's condition, including a knowledge of and skill sufficient to institute emergency procedures, such as CPR, obstructed airway maneuvers, seizure precautions, and other related procedures. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed two (2) years of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of general specialized experience and education beyond high school. Time-in-grade: There is no time and grade restriction for the GS-04 grade level. Physical Requirements: The work involves long periods of standing and walking. The incumbent must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and over freely. Positioning and lifting patients requires considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Occasionally, the employee prevents the patient from performing destructive acts against self, others or property. Manual dexterity is mandatory; may be required to lift weights up to 60 pounds utilizing good body mechanics and appropriate equipment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Accepts or enters request for testing into computerized system. Performs microbiology setups including plating and accessing of microbiology samples. Draws blood from outpatients for requested laboratory testing. Receives all specimens that are sent to commercial reference laboratories for testing. Adheres to safety, infection control, and universal precautions at all times while drawing blood. Observes and report any physical or mental changes while patients are being drawn. Performs other duties assigned as related to the position.
