Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:
Position: Data Entry Clerk
Position Summary: Data Entry Clerks are responsible for entering patient, client, billing and test information into the Laboratory Information System. Information is either typed and 10-keyed into the system or accepted through electronic interfaces established with CPL clients. Accuracy in this process is critical as it is the fundamental process upon which all laboratory operations are based (testing, reporting, billing, etc....) Due to the exposure of confidential information and to the potential of violating federal law, a thorough understanding of and adherence to CPL policies and procedures and compliance regulations are essential.
Principal Responsibilities:
Utilizes job knowledge, judgment and problem solving skills to ensure quality of work.
Accurately enters all required information presented on CPL or client specific requisitions into the laboratory information system. Understands and recognizes laboratory information system alerts and flags and takes the appropriate actions. Recognizes when information presented on requisitions is unclear and ambiguous and knows and follows corrective actions to be taken. Participates in departmental quality assurance practices. May act as a resource to others who require assistance/training. Follows all departmental policies and procedures related to data entry Recognizes personal limitations and seeks guidance from supervisors or managers when needed.

Demonstrates efficiency by performing procedures rapidly and with accuracy. Manages time appropriately. Strives to meet departmental goals for daily completion time. Utilizes appropriate supplies with minimal waste. Utilizes unstructured time constructively.

Scope: Integral component of the quality of laboratory services by providing accurate information upon which multiple processes are based. Primarily performs data entry into the laboratory information system mainframe, requiring basic computer skills such as keyboards, CRTs and printers. Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory. Adheres to all laboratory policies and regulations. Effectively communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone and computer methods with managers, coworkers and to a lesser degree, clients. Ability to work as a team member in a production environment.
This role will have routine access to Protected Health Information (PHI). Employees will be trained on reasonable safeguards and are expected to maintain strict confidentiality, as well as abide by all applicable privacy and security standards. Employees are expected only to access PHI when it is required to fulfill job duties.
Education:
Minimum - High School Diploma or GED
Preferred - Medical Assistant/Medical Terminology Training
Experience: Data entry experience in a production environment, preferably in a laboratory/health care setting, but not required.
Skills: Minimum - Typing skill of a minimum of 60 wpm; proficiency with 10 key
Reporting Relationship: Reports to supervisor.
Physical Demands: Requires the ability to sit for extended period of times at a data entry station using keyboards, CRTs and other peripheral laboratory equipment. Requires the ability to shift points of vision and focus from documents to CRTs. Requires the ability to sit in and employ ergonomic positions and techniques to avoid repetitive motion or stress injuries. May require some pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching above shoulder height, grasping with both hands, pinching with thumb and forefinger, twisting with hand and wrist.
Environmental Demands: Works in temperature controlled environment with constant exposure to biological and chemical hazards. May be required to operate fire and safety equipment or follow other safety procedures in an emergency situation. May be required to work with time constraints and crisis situations.
Position: Laboratory Assistant
Position Summary: Responsible for accurately handling and processing all laboratory specimens, ensuring specimen integrity by adhering to laboratory procedures. Serves as a resource for specimen and testing information. Adheres to departmental policies and procedures to include department programs, quality control, quality assurance, and safety.
Prepares laboratory specimens for designed departs/locations prior to laboratory analysis and testing. Unpacks specimens for branches or ports and routes specimens by type to various staging areas. Prepares all specimens received for testing in designated laboratory departments or locations such as staging of specimens, labeling, and distribution of samples for departments. Prepares excess specimen samples for storage and resolves and document problem specimens. Other tasks as assigned.

Follows laboratory procedures for specimen processing
Correctly identifies proper tubes, containers, transport media and storage temperature for each test type.
Determines specimen acceptability, consulting with specimen processing supervisor, technologist, or pathologist as needed taking appropriate action when necessary.

Works with minimal direction, consults with technologists and general supervisor as needed. Operates general laboratory equipment, including but not limited to: telephones, computer keyboards and CRT, and centrifuges. Effectively communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone, and computer methods.

Skills: Ability to communicate effectively at all levels within the laboratory and with laboratory clients. Ability to read and write.
Reporting Relationship: Reports to the Specimen Processing Supervisor or other designated supervisor.
Physical Requirements: Requires light to medium lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires manipulation of tools, objects, and equipment using the following physical motions: pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching above shoulder height, grasping with both hands, pinching with thumb and forefinger, twisting with hand and wrist, climbing under, lifting up, lifting down, and reaching under. Routinely requires coordination of two or more physical operations. Routinely requires visual discrimination of color, size, shape, and motility. Requires the ability to hear audible alarms on temperature monitored equipment and automated analyzers.
