Summary:
Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides a comprehensive surgical risk assessment to patients in the UNC Health Nash Anesthesia Surgical Screening Clinic, in effort to reduce morbidity and mortality, decrease hospital lengths of stay, improve patient experience and support quality health outcomes. The APP participates in the pre-anesthesia clinic care of the patient in a role which the supervising physician deems proper and consistent with applicable law, hospital regulations, and delineation of privileges, and is in combination with training, knowledge, skill, and experience and within scope of practice.
APP Role/Tasks/Specific Duties may include but are not limited to:
* Assessment of the health status of individuals through chart review, history taking and physical examination.
* Use of current, evidence-based knowledge to support decision making.
* Appropriately order necessary diagnostic studies and tests, interpret the results, and initiate appropriate follow up.
* Institute referrals to a physician or other care provider when deemed appropriate.
* Collaborate with Anesthesia providers as needed to optimize patients prior to surgery and to meet the patient perioperative care needs.
* Develop an appropriate treatment plan when applicable
* Communicate with patients and their surgeon or proceduralist abnormal findings and treatment plan.
* Partner with patients to enhance their understanding of how compliance with the therapeutic regimen can improve their perioperative outcomes.
* Provide instruction and counseling to individuals about the perioperative period and anesthesia.
* Complete daily consult notes in the Electronic Medical Record and submit patient charges in a timely fashion.
The APP works under the medical supervision of a Physician and/or Program Director. He/she will provide medical assessment and evaluation for the patients prior to surgery as applicable based on surgical risk and ASA class. All care services will be performed under the supervision of the designated supervising physician and/or back up physician under North Carolina Law
Responsibilities:
The APP recognizes that there is no single solution when it comes to patient care and strives to foster a collaborative environment that focuses on all aspects of patient care.
* Works collaboratively as part of a team with co-workers and communicates effectively with nurses, peers, physicians, and outside departments.
* Demonstrates knowledge and ability to interview pre-anesthesia patients and to reconcile with the RN's health/illness history - including HPI, chief complaint, medical and surgical history, and review of systems.
* Demonstrates knowledge and ability to perform physical examination of patients, document findings, and communicate to appropriate physician. Demonstrates knowledge to assess and document normal versus abnormal findings.
* Demonstrates knowledge of a multitude of medications and their impact on the surgical process.
* Effectively supports nurse education and reiterates patients and families pre-surgery requirements, instructions, and medications, as needed.
* Works toward department improvements by sharing ideas for improvement/revision of policies/procedures.
* Participates in educational programs, serves on committees, and seeks other opportunities for professional and personal growth and development. Maintains all professional training and/or license requirements for role. .
* Demonstrates knowledge of Infection Control and Safety Policies and Procedures.
* Ensures Safety measures by utilizing all safety initiatives. Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic tests
* Gather health histories, perform physical examinations and collaborating with providers to order and all needed diagnostic procedures
* Dictate and document all patient interactions
* Notify managing physician about unusual or unexpected events or problems
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Effectively communicate with diverse populations, including physicians, employees, patients, and families
Other information:
Graduate of an accredited NP or PA program. Successful completion of course work for specialized training in basic health assessment.
- Current state nursing licensure and NP registration/approval to practice, OR
- Current PA license/registration to practice
- Current ACLS/BLS certification
- Three (3) to five (5) years of demonstrated experience in field or profession preferred.
